I Am Rohingya is the first virtual reality documentary on the Rohingya refugee crisis and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.

Produced by Contrast VR, Al Jazeera Media Network’s new immersive studio, and AJ+, in partnership with Amnesty International.

The film premiered in headsets during the Vancouver International Film Festival on October 6, 2017.

SYNOPSIS

Jamalida loves to dance. She sometimes gets the chance at a wedding or a local celebration, even though she lives in a refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Experience Jamalida’s life inside the camp and watch an account of how she fled the violence in Myanmar in immersive animation.

Jamalida is one of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya muslims who are not considered citizens of their home country, Myanmar, and are not wanted by their host country.

“I want to talk to you,” she says. “I hope you can tell others about my story.”

In this immersive VR film by Contrast VR and AJ+, ride with Jamalida around the crowded camp, accompany her inside her tiny home, sit down in the narrow streets with her sons as they play and feel what’s it like to be a refugee stranded in a foreign land.

December 2017 we joined Amref Flying Doctors on an inspiring trip to Kenya. We followed young Maasai girl Sereya, who is one of many young girls saying ‘no’ to FGM (Female Genital Mutilation); a practice that unfortunately is still widely spread within this, otherwise beautiful, culture.

The VR documentary follows Sereya as she goes through the ‘Alternative Rite of Passage’; a ceremony that is being adopted by the community as an alternative for circumcision. Get to know Sereya as she shows you around her Boma, watch her make new friends at the ARP and be with her as she feels the excitement of ‘candle night’ where she will be accepted as a young woman by her community.

'My Home, Shatila - Director's Cut' tells the story of Fadia, a 14-year-old Palestinian/Syrian refugee living in Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon.

Fadia dreams of becoming a lawyer eventhough she knows refugees are not allowed to work in Lebanon. She is afraid of losing her own life or one of her family members because of the poor and dangerous conditions she is lving in.

Last March we joined Swiss NGO HEKS/EPER (https://en.heks.ch/changemaker) and local partner Najdeh on a trip to Beirut to film the dire conditions of the refugee camp.

A mini documentary from Fukushima in virtual reality.
Evacuee and Fukushima survivor, Mrs Kanno returning to her former home in Shimo-Tsushima, nearly 7 years after the nuclear accident. Located in the exclusion zone of Namie, Fukushima prefecture, this area is closed for people to return to. However, the Japanese government plans to open a small area of Tsushima as early as 2023. The levels of radiation measured in this highly contaminated area mean that it will be many decades and beyond the end of the century before radiation levels will even approach government targets.

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the Pacific Northwest's most amazing natural wonders. To those of us in Oregon, it's like our backyard. We spend our Summers backpacking, camping, hiking, fishing, paddling and kiteboarding there.

When a destructive wildfire was started near the Eagle Creek Trailhead on Labor Day weeked of 2017, we all watched in shock and horror as nearly 50,000 acres in the Gorge were engulfed in flames. Major transportation routes shut down, trails were closed, hikers were stranded for hours, and people were forced to evacuate their homes and businesses. The careless actions of an individual lighting and throwing fireworks during a burn ban ultimately led to an estimated $36 million in damages. But for everyone who loves the Gorge, the impacts of the fire go far beyond monetary value. A cherished landscape was forever changed, and our “backyard” will never be quite the same.

The Fire in our Backyard is a story about the fire and its impact on our community. From the incredible response of wildland firefighters, search and rescue teams, and the Forest Service, to the people who live and work in the Gorge, our film examines the consequences of the Eagle Creek Fire on one of Oregon's most cherished landmarks.

The film follows a 22-year-old man, Aamir, who, whilst escaping the threat of murder in Sudan, begins a journey across Sudan, Libya, the Mediterranean, Italy and France.
The film demonstrates how VR and 360 technology can enhance the process of dramatic storytelling by placing their audiences in the shoes of another. The project was screened at the Sheffield Doc Festival (National Theatre) 2016 and continues to tour around the world.

“Home: Aamir is an entirely new type of documentary. It combines the production processes and storytelling techniques of theatre with 360 film to create a beautifully-crafted and deeply affecting virtual reality experience that takes you to the heart of the most important issue of the day – immigration – and makes you look at it with a fresh perspective and a depth of compassion rarely reached in traditional media.” Mark Atkin, Sheffield Doc Fest curator
