History of Tavares Seaplane City

Founded in the late 1800s, Tavares grew as a transportation and citrus shipping hub along the Harris Chain of Lakes. Lake Dora was once traveled by steamboats carrying goods and tourists to early Florida resorts.

In 2010, Tavares officially branded itself as America’s Seaplane City and established the Tavares Seaplane Base (FAA identifier FA1). Unlike traditional airports, this base operates directly from Lake Dora, allowing amphibious aircraft to land and taxi to docks in downtown.

This rare integration of aviation and boating makes Tavares one of the few places in the United States where you can watch planes land on water just steps from restaurants and public parks. Today, the seaplane base supports tourism, flight training, and sightseeing flights while preserving Tavares’ deep connection to lake-based transportation.
